In two weeks from now, I'll be back at school gearing up for a new school-year (already? Say it ain't so Toto, say-it-ain't-so!). I recently received a by-the-textbook tip from the people at Textbooks.com.
Textbooks by far are one of the biggest expenses a college kid can have next to food and living. I remember my freshman year, I spent a total of $500 on books--my fall semester. $200 being my Chemistry book for the Chemistry class that I dropped a week later. A paperweight that my school wouldn't buyback because the creators of the horrid textbook were already working on a newer edition! HOW DARE THEY?! If only I knew about Textbooks.com back then... That's $200 I will never get back. $200 I could have spent on two to three pairs of shoes from Aldo or on a spiffy winter coat from Zara. Woops, I already did that.

"The biggest mistake that many students make when purchasing their textbooks is that they wait too long. The secret to reducing the cost of a student’s textbooks is to shop early when the used books are plentiful. Used books save money – big money, especially when the used books are bought online on sites like Textbooks.com."

Luckily for me, I have a lot of older friends who are the same major as me and relinquish their textbooks to the Secretista Book Fund (that I just made up) when they are done. If I don't already have the book in my possession, I order them online. The books at my school's bookstore are just too darn expensive! So fellow college comrades, yell hooray for a site like Textbooks.com.

I totally understand. I had to buy a book that was like $150 and I lost it within the first couple of weeks :( Then I ended up buying an older edition since they were basically the same thing but of course couldn't sell it back.
ReplyDeleteI usually use TextbooksRus or Alibris. I've had really good results with them. Amazon is also pretty good at having used books.
Sadly, I pick courses 4 days before classes start :(. I think it's a ploy to get us to buy books from the bookstore.
ReplyDeleteCommenting on your precious post, you ARE a totally awesome blog!
ReplyDeleteYour textbooks are so expensive it's untrue. $200 for a book = pretty stuff instead!

Argh I feel your pain. ESPECIALLY when they won't buy the books back...newer editions aren't THAT much different than the older ones, just buy my books back, gawd.
ReplyDeleteThe worst is when they make you buy the textbook and it has to be the newest edition and then they never refer to it or assign much out of it or anyone ever uses it and then you don't even open it all semester.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, textbooks are SO expensive! I have to change textbooks every semester. Each textbook is an average of 50-60 bucks! :S
ReplyDeleteWas that "you said it all", for me?
ReplyDeleteoh em gee I went to CRUMBS today. thank you for the tip THEY WERE THE BEST CUPCAKES I'VE EVER HAD hands DOWN! I ate 2 cupcakes in a row and I wait to go back and get more ! Thanks!
ReplyDeletebook buying is SO FRUSTRATING! especially when you don't even use the books you're required to buy!
ReplyDeleteI wish you the best for this new school year! It´s always excting!
ReplyDeleteFor high school, my school lends us the textbooks for the year, but my dad always buys a copy for me to keep at home.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea where he buys them though. The most expensive book was my math book for next year. I think it was kind of obscure.
It's great that your friends are able to help you out!
Amazon.com is also great for finding cheap books!
