Hiatus

I'm taking a break from blogging until next week.

School starts next week. RA training starts today and I'm feeling very anxious about life. This semester is going to be crazy for me. My day is going to start at 6am five days a week. Two days out of the week my classes start at 8am. The other three include catching an 8am train into the city or preparing for work at 9am. I'd rather start my day early and end it early. Oh, I'm waking up at 6am not to get ready, but to hit the gym.

Resident Assistant Fo' Life!

It's no secret I'm a Resident Assistant. And it's also no secret that I love being one! My staff is amazing and my residents are too. There's so much work that goes into this job, but I don't mind putting forth all my OCD-like (haha) energy to complete every single task that's thrown my way. It also doesn't hurt that I get free housing.

That being said, the new semester starts in two weeks! And with a new semester comes a new floor theme. Last semester it was cupcakes; remember? My door tags looked like this. I love sharing the things I love with... anyone, so it was only fitting that my Spring semester floor theme would be magazines! Magazines, j'adore.

My bulletin board.

I created my own magazine though. It's entitled "Second Floor" because that's my floor and also the best floor on campus (hehe). Each resident has a cover page with their name and a couple facts about themselves.

If you ever get the chance to be an RA, do it.

True Life: I'm A Resident Assistant--Update x100?

Well, move-in day for first year students is only 5 days away! My first batch of residents are almost here--yay! My week has been jammed packed with lectures, activities, and "staff ds"--that stands for staff development. Because I've been so busy, I haven't had time to clean and organize my room and it's driving me carazy! I hate clutter more than anything and I feel like everything is out of place; I've got vital papers everywhere! Thankfully, my clothes are nicely organized (hehe). I mean, as if I would allow my clothes to be unorganized and free in my room. HA! My babies deserve to be tucked away in their precious places. *Blows kisses to closet and dressers* However, it was a challenge for me to find the right place for ALL of my clothing (I brought a little too much), but I made it work, and ya know, nothing makes a fashion-lover more happy than an organized closet. Don't cha think?

So in my previous post, the fabulous Imelda Matt asked, "What's a Resident Assistant?" Imelda dear, a Resident Assistant is this:

Ha! I love this picture, but in seriousness, a Resident Assistant (RA), is a student who is hired by the school to make sure that the residents of his or her floor is abiding by the school's policies. However, at my school, it's much more than that. Being hired as an RA is a pretty big deal. Hundreds of students apply and only a little under 100 are hired. We do more than "babysit" and serve as "party police." The RAs at my school are responsible in building a community within their residence hall. We are your mother/father, mentor, counselor, and best friend mold into one! Ultimately, I am responsible for the residence of my floor and make sure that they are living in a healthy, safe, and fun environment. Oh how I love being an RA, and the school year hasn't even begun!

I think the fact that I love my RA staff is the reason I'm loving being an RA. Everyday is a non-stop laughing adventure. I'm learning so much about each of them, as well as, myself and I'm loving every minute of it! They all inspire me to be a better person. They inspire me to be a more spontaneous and a softer better being (if you get to know me, I am a very blunt person and that can come off a little too harsh), while reminding me that every conversation could use a little sarcasm and that gentle and sweet men do exist in this world.

True Life: I'm A Resident Assistant--Update

Photobucket

Forgive me for these half-assed posts. Training and bonding with my RA staff takes up much more time than I thought it would! My door tags are half way done; a couple more need some cherry stems and some sprinkles. The hott British soccer coaches are gone from my floor, so there's no more eye candy. I DID get a new shirt size (yay!). My RD went out of her way to get me a new shirt and I love her for that, so I'm looking like the bombdigity in a well fit shirt, and these sporadic posts are bound to stop in a week. I'll be back to interacting with you all very soon. I promise.

True Life: I'm A Resident Assistant--Update

Nothing hurts me more than having a piece of clothing that isn't my desired size. Tonight my RD (Resident Director) handed out our staff polo shirts. For some reason, she had me down as a size SMALL. Uh, WHAT?!?! I am not and never will be a small; I'm a medium/large. Well, I can fit into a small, but you know that saying, "your jeans should fit you, not you fit it?" Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about the polo. I don't feel like bothering my RD anymore, so I'm just going to suck it up... or... not eat for a couple of days--haha! I kept my mind off of the polo by working on my bulletin board, and c'est fini!

True Life: I'm A Resident Assistant

Well. I LOVE BEING A RESIDENT ASSISTANT! So far, the rest of the (new) RAs of my residence hall are amazing! I can already tell this is going to be a great year. We're bonding and schmoozing (my new favorite word) like no other. As the training goes on, I'm slowly realizing that this coming semester sleep will be a thing of the past. But having this job as an RA will force me to be more responsible and organized, and I'm super excited for that.

Right now, I'm in a building that has 14 floors. Each floor has an RA (except the 13th--that's the lounge area). The RAs have to come up with door tags for their residents' doors and usually, the door tags (and the whole floor in general) has to have a ongoing theme. Well, guess what my theme is? ...CUPCAKES! Also, at the center of the hall, there's a main bulletin board and we are expected to deck it out in our theme. Ohh how I can't wait to decorate it! In fact, I think I might go start it now. But first, I must say hello to some soccer players that are staying 4 floors above me--hehe. I mean... I must go... help... a fellow RA who is staying on that floor with his bulletin board. Yeah... that's it.

Although the training sessions are all day long, my staff knows how to bring the party:

Actually, it was theme day and we dressed up as a birthday party; I was the cupcake (duh)!
